Volvo, Mack Trucks announce deal with Samsara

Volvo, Samsara

Volvo Trucks North America
and sister brand Mack Trucks have signed an agreement with Internet of Things (IoT) provider Samsara to explore a range of telematics solutions aimed at improving fleet safety and efficiency. The partnership will consider compliance services, cameras, trailer sensors, safety and maintenance offerings.

Samsara’s portfolio combines hardware, software and cloud to bring real-time visibility, analytics and AI to operations. The company serves more than 15,000 customers across a range of industries, including transportation and logistics, field services, energy, construction, and more.

“We look forward to working with Samsara and their unique data systems,” said Conal Deedy, director of customer productivity solutions, Volvo Trucks North America, in a press statement released Tuesday. “This opportunity allows us to explore how our customers can leverage Samsara’s integrated solutions for more efficient fleet management.”

Samsara is racking up partnerships with original equipment manufacturers eager to stay on the leading edge of connectivity trends by expanding embedded telematics offerings.

The latest announcement comes a couple of months after Samsara inked its first OEM deal, with Navistar  (NYSE: NAV), the country’s fourth-largest truck manufacturer. Navistar customers can now add Samsara’s fleet management software to that factory-installed solution without the need for new hardware.

Volvo and Mack have collaborated with other IoT companies on connected truck solutions, such as a collaboration with Geotab to send electronic logging device (ELD) data to the cloud and back for interference-free reporting.

And several Mack vehicles already run on the Samsara platform, according to the press statement.

Through this agreement, “we hope to provide fleet managers and drivers with a more holistic understanding of their data and in turn, operate a safer and more efficient fleet, said Rushil Goel, vice president and general manager, fleet management at Samsara, in the statement.

Details regarding specific offerings to be developed as part of the Volvo and Mack agreement have not yet been finalized.
