Transportation company Ryder System has partnered with logistics visibility major PowerFleet to embed telematics into its forklifts and other material-handling equipment in its warehouses. With over 50,000 customers, Ryder is a logistics behemoth that manages critical fleet, transportation and other supply chain functions. 

Over the next 12 to 18 months, Ryder will deploy the PowerFleet Enterprise solution on more than 1,000 pieces of material-handling equipment at over 30 sites across North America. Ryder operates around 300 warehouses that account for more than 55 million square feet in area. 

For PowerFleet, the partnership with Ryder came about after winning a request for proposal (RFP) about 18 months ago. “There are a number of features that convinced Ryder to move forward that focus on safety, such as automated and configurable checklists, OSHA compliance, impact reporting, management and alerting,” said Mark Stanton, general manager at PowerFleet for industrial operations. 

The Enterprise solution was designed by keeping larger companies in mind, providing support for companies that have their equipment spread across several locations — a critical service need for Ryder in the context of scalability. “In addition, the application (VisionPro) is very intuitive, easy to use and requires minimal training. Lastly, the customer support capabilities that we provide was an important factor,” said Stanton. 

By integrating PowerFleet’s telematics solutions, Ryder can gain better visibility across its end-to-end operations, delivering higher efficiencies, enhanced safety and regulatory compliance in material-handling operations. 

PowerFleet Enterprise allows Ryder to manage and track industrial assets like forklifts and connect with operators in warehouses, distribution centres and manufacturing facilities. Being highly configurable, the solution can be tailored to meet Ryder’s operational needs and the different clients it services, going into the future.

In essence, Ryder can benefit from better access control, equipment checklist compliance, asset performance and operator accountability. 

“We’re thrilled to work with Ryder to deliver best-in-class safety telematics technology,” said Stanton. “Ryder’s integrated logistics team will now have increased visibility into key safety features of their material-handling equipment to provide their customers with a full, 360-degree picture of their operations to optimize safety and reduce operating costs.”

Stanton explained that Ryder’s response has been positive, with the initial deployments successfully meeting the safety requirements. The solution is now used to monitor asset fleet utilization and potential segments to increase cost savings.
